William Henshall
Former convict William Henshall became Australia’s first minter in 1813, when he punched and restruck the infamous holey dollar.
Acting under the orders of Governor Macquarie, Henshall employed his expertise, honed as a cutler - and later forger and counterfeiter, to create new coins from Spanish silver reals. Utilising specialist machinery that Henshall designed and built himself, Henshall cut the centre from the Spanish real, creating two new coins. The outer ring - the ‘Holey Dollar’ - was worth five shillings, while the centre - the ‘dump’ - was worth 15 pence. The coins were sent into circulation until 1822 when they were replaced with sterling coinage.
